OUR Church's Story

In May of 2014 Sugar Creek Baptist Church initiated an Adopt-A-Cop Prayer Protection Ministry.  The idea was not an original one.  When I began looking for a means in which to lead our church to reach out and support our local law enforcement personnel, through a simple Google search I was introduced to Adopt-A-Cop.  You can read more about the history of Adopt-A-Cop here.  We have benefited greatly from the foundation built by Sgt. Ken Rochell!
We currently have over 250 different prayer partners who are praying for over 125 individual law enforcement officers by name!  These officers represent 12 diferent agencies across the states of Texas, Arkansas and Colorado.
Here are some key principles which I believe help make our Adopt-A-Cop ministry successful.  These same principles can be implemented by any church who chooses to be a party of this powerful ministry.

KEY PRINCIPLES

  •   Prayer is in our "DNA"
Long before I arrived on staff at Sugar Creek Baptist Church, our Pastor, Dr. Mark Hartman, had led our church to believe in the power of prayer.  We have multiple prayer ministry opportunities for our members to be involved in.  We hold fast to the conviction that God's Word is true and that He delights in the faithful prayers of His people when they act upon the truth of His Word.   “I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:1–4, NLT)
  • Provide the Tools to do the Task
When one of our members signed up to "adopt-a-cop" we provided them the name of an individual officer, the address of the department they worked for and a stack of prayer cards for them to use to mail a note of encouragement to their officer.  We also made box available outside our church auditorium for them to drop the cards off so that we could mail them on their behalf.  Each month we send out an email reminding them to send a card to their officer(s) along with information, poems, recent stories and suggested scriptures they could include in their note cards.  We do everything we possibly can to make the task easy!  We also provide the individual law enforcement officer and their prayer partner a "challenge-coin" as a reminder to the officers that they are being prayed for and as a reminder for their prayer partner to pray!  (I will share more about the challenge coins in a future post.)
  • Paid the Price in Time and Resources

A culture of excellence permeates all that we attempt to accomplish at Sugar Creek. We serve an excellent God and He deserves our best efforts.  The initial launching and setting up the Adopt-A-Cop ministry in our church took A. Lot. Of. Time!
We were doing it the "old fashion way"  using sign-up cards, matching cards with officers, typing all the information into spreadsheets and data base programs.  We knew there was an easier way and this website is a product of Sugar Creek's  mission to Love and Lead All People to Life Change in Christ!

On May 31, 2015 we held our first Law Enforcement Appreciation Sunday.  The question was asked: "Do the law enforcement officers genuinely appreciate our efforts?" This video was shown during all three worship services as an answer to that question.   If you have any questions about starting an Adopt-A-Cop Prayer Protection Ministry in your church, don't hesitate to contact us.
